Researchers found that under visible light irradiation, gold nanoparticles dispersed on oxide supports exhibited significant activity for oxidation of formaldehyde and methanol in air at ambient temperature. Tiny particles of gold, energised by the sun, are able to destroy air-borne pollutants like volatile organic chemical (VOCs), which may often come from new furniture, carpets and paint in good condition. VOCs create that 'new' smell as they are slowly released from walls and furniture, but they, along with methanol and carbon monoxide, are not good for health, even in small amounts.
Also supported gold nanoparticles will be used as photocatalysts for catalysing synthesis reaction of useful organic compounds under moderated conditions. The potential of the new photocatalysis processes is:
