Overview

Our BPM discipline is concerned with empirical, experimental, conceptual, formal, and technical research in the area of business process management. Much of our research has been conducted in collaboration with researchers from universities across the world. The discipline has strong links with industry and has conducted work in a variety of application areas (e.g. health, screen business).

The discipline is known for its research on workflow patterns and YAWL (Yet Another Workflow Language) and has had a long-standing focus on business process automation. This has resulted in the development of the YAWL open source BPM environment.

More recently, research has started in the area of large process model repositories, leading to the Apromore initiative. The group is also a contributor to the ProM environment.

The BPM discipline is also renowned for its research on BPM Maturity and Capability Development, the use of Process Modelling in Organisational Practice, and Ontological Foundations of Process Modelling. Much of this research has been published in the top journals of the Information Systems field.
