Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

Videogames are unique in the level of immersion they engender and the motivational pull they exert on people. Because of this they offer an opportunity to have a powerful positive impact on people's lives. The goals of the project are to design and develop videogames that improve wellbeing (which is defined as the combination of feeling good, functioning well and being socially connected). A secondary goal of the project is explore under which conditions and for whom games may have a negative impact on players (e.g., vulnerable sub-groups of people).

Depending on the skillset and background of the candidate, the outcomes of the project could be design guidelines or theoretical models for the production of games that would have a positive impact on wellbeing, or the actual development/production of such games.

Further comments: Students will work within QUT's Games and Interactive Entertainment Lab. Our team includes senior research staff and higher degree students working together on related projects. We aim to continue building a supportive and collaborative environment that helps everyone in our team achieve the best outcomes they can in their research. We have a dedicated laboratory with a range of high-end gaming equipment set up for experimental and observational research.
