Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

The volcanism on the Island of Tristan da Cunha is dominated by a silica undersaturated relatively high K series that range from alkali olivine basalts to phonolites. The high K nature of this volcanism suggests atypical melting dynamics of the mantle beneath Tristan da Cunha. This project will use U-series disequilibrium systematics to unravel the nature of this melting. The project will also investigate melt and fluid inclusions within olivine phenocrysts to define primary melt compositions and the volatiles associated with melting.
