Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

The Earth Smart Science (ESS) program is a Queensland initiative for primary schools to reduce their ecological footprint. ESS schools develop and implement School Environmental Management Plans (SEMPs) as a whole-school approach to managing school resources. The SEMP focuses on waste minimisation, water conservation, energy efficiency and biodiversity improvements The key to the ESS program is to foster knowledge of and commitment to environmental sustainability through integration of the SEMP process into the curriculum with a particular focus on science and mathematics. Hypothesis/Aims: The aim of this project is to develop toolkit of mobile and sensor technologies and information visualisation tools for collecting, manipulating and sharing environmental data related to a SEMP. Approaches: The project will involve initial user studies or background literature review to understand the Earth Smart Science program and the school context. This will be followed by design, development and evaluation of prototypes to facilitate developing and maintaining a SEMP and integrating it into the curriculum.
