Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
Wild rabbits are arguably the worst vertebrate pest in Australia. Their management in Australia is unique in the use of two lethal diseases that have been introduced for the purposes of control. However, little is known about the influence of the dynamics of these diseases on the regional abundance of wild rabbits. A further complicating factor is the effects of different landscapes on disease transmission and persistence.
The aim of this project is to examine spatial disease interactions and to determine the effects of these diseases on the abundance of wild rabbits. This project will involve field work, small mammal trapping and data analysis. This project will be an important contribution to current and planned management of wild rabbits in Australia.
