Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

Temperature is an important controller of decomposition, but the temperature-decomposition relationship is a central area of uncertainty in carbon dynamics in a warmer world. Kinetic theory suggests that substrates resistant to decomposition are more sensitive to temperature than labile substrates, yet uncertainty about the applicability of kinetic theory to decomposition is substantial. We seek a student who will help develop a set of experiments that seek to understand the temperature sensitivities of the biochemical and soil mechanisms that control decomposition. We hope this student will build upon previously-used approaches by developing new analyses to extend the time-horizon for which the temperature sensitivity versus lability relationship has been examined.
