Overview
Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
The use of mobile phones and communication technologies is a developing area of research in health care, in particular, in resource poor nations where wireless communication networks have been established in preference to fixed-line communication. 1 Mobile phone text messaging has been utilised to schedule medical appointments, medical test and medication reminders and exchange of medical test results.1 Adherence with medication administration is a major problem with the elderly and chronically ill patients.2,3 Advanced mobile/internet applications have the potential to enhance medication adherence in high risk groups of patients resulting in improved health and leading to reduced health care expenditure.
Hypothesis/Aims: The aim of the study is to determine the level of communication technology used by consumers of medication, and acceptance and willingness to pay for technology facilitated adherence. This study will form the basis for further development of innovative mobile/internet technology applications designed to aid medication adherence for at risk groups of patients.
Approaches: A literature review will be conducted to establish the previous research that has been conducted in this area. Based on these findings, an instrument/s will be devised to enable the gathering of data on the usage of mobile/internet technology by consumers of medication (patients), and willingness to pay and acceptance of technology as an aid for medication compliance by health professionals and consumers. Statistical analysis of this data will define the unmet need for TFA.
