Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
Significant efforts have already been directed towards the use of radical scavengers and antioxidants in preventative and therapeutic strategies to treat neurodegenerative disorders. Flavanoids are a class of secondary plant phenolics with significant antioxidant and chelating properties that are present in fruits, vegetables, wines, teas and cocoa. Another dietary antioxidant of interest is resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in red wine and peanuts.
This research proposes to incorporate nitroxide moieties into the flavanoid and resveratrol structures in order to generate potentially dual-acting compounds with enhanced antioxidant properties for neurodegenerative diseases.
The student will primarily gain experience in synthetic organic chemistry, including retrosynthesis and functional group transformations, synthesis of organic compounds, purification of compounds using chromatography and compound characterisation.
