Topic status: In progress

This project will incoperate a wide variety of geoscience based coral reef research. It will aquire knowledge on the biology, microstructure and diagenesis of both live and fossil corals as well as other carbonate materials. It will involve both lab and field work and use techniques such as scanning electron microscopy and microCT.

Research activities

The research activities include:

  • field surveys and sample collection of fossil assemblage on the dead reef flat
  • cleaning and cataloguing specimens
  • processing collected coral skeletons.

Expected outcomes

The expected outcomes are:

  • an introduction to corals reef systems and carbonate sedimentology
  • a field and lab experience.

Duration of project

November 2011 to January 2012– 6 weeks (dependant on tide)
