Government support includes a range of financial measures (such as grants and subsidies) and business advisory services (training, advising and various kinds of practical assistance) are an important aspect of the inputs of expertise sought by most small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Business advisory services have become a major mechanism for governments to deliver support to small business. There is increasing evidence that small business advisory programs impact on subsequent firm growth.
Potential research students can investigate, but are not restricted to, the follow research questions:
- What are the similarities and differences between Western and Asian Contexts for seeking external business advice?
- What are the challenges and opportunities for seeking business advice in SMEs?
- What are the impacts of business advice on SMEs’ innovation?
- How do firms in Asia develop network ties or Guanxi with stakeholders and use these ties as a source of business advice?
