Service oriented architecture (SOA) and other service-oriented IT initiatives have been hyped as the means to enable Business-IT alignment. However, to date, very little empirical evidence exist as to whether that potential has indeed been realised. Through case studies in organisations that have implemented or are implementing service-orientation initiatives, this research aims to investigate and provide empirical evidence of the link between service orientation and Business-IT alignment. It is hypothesised that while there is indeed direct relationship between service orientation, this relationship is moderated by several key cultural, organisational, and behavioural factors, the identification and validation of which is a key contribution of this research.
