Overview
Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
This project will examine, in detail, the sedimentology of the mid-Cretaceous Winton Formation in the vicinity of world-famous Dinosaur Stampede National Monument (Lark Quarry). The site contains the world's greatest concentration of dinosaur tracks, but little detailed work has been undertaken on the sedimentology underpinning the palaeoenvironmental interpretation of the site. The dinosaur tracks are preserved within a fluvial and lacustrine sequence containing a variety of facies architectures. The nature of the local topography enables examination and analysis of the sequence in three dimensions.
This project will document the Winton Formation in the Lark Quarry area, examining and interpreting detailed sedimentology, exploring provenance and petrology, and developing a modern and evidence-based palaeoenvironmental interpretation in a local and regional context.
Support from the Winton Shire Council with accommodation on site, and scientific support from the Queensland Museum will be afforded to the right candidate.
