This project considers how current scheduling methodologies can be used to improve the scheduling of elective patients in intensive care units. The creation of a robust elective patient schedule in particular will be focused upon and the concept of safety slack is incorporated to provide robustness. This safety slack will be determined by meta-heuristic algorithms. The competition for beds between elective patients and emergency patients is also a significant element of the problem that affects schedule creation that must be managed. Therefore an existing bed partitioning strategy will compared with a new strategy that does not partition the beds but instead maintains a number of free beds at each time. This will be achieved by either a mathematical model or a heuristic algorithm.
