Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

Life Cycle Assessment studies help to quantify product impacts on resources but, the complexity and variability of farming systems and supply chains, and the interaction of human and natural factors introduce particular challenges for food and fibre products. This is particularly true where agriculture is expanding in Australia's sub-tropical and tropical regions. Critical questions for this research project are: Can LCA methodologies provide a basis for quantifying and comparing the impacts and sustainability of different agricultural products?; How should the key impact categories be weighted?; Should assessment be based on data intensive, costly case studies or broad regional estimates?
