Overview

Topic status: In progress

The Shatsky Rise is a 140Ma Oceanic Plateau in the northwest Pacific. Dredges from the plateau contain abundant pumice material of varying ages, with very fresh samples and samples coated in varying thicknesses of manganese oxide. The pumice is derived from silicic arc volcanism 1000’s of kilometres from Shatsky Rise. Petrological characterisation of the pumice is an essential first step in the understanding the pumice sources and their temporal variation.

Research activities

The research activities undertaken during the project include:

  • the preparation of pumice samples for petrological
  • geochemical analysis.

Expected outcomes

Petrological descriptions of a significant number of pumice samples, characterisation of the samples for subdivision into distinct groups.
