Overview
Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
The development of molecular machines or switches that can be driven by the application of an external stimulus is particularly attractive due to the potential applications in the area of molecular scale electronics or logic devices. This project will investigate the use of metalloporphyrin-ligand templation to synthesise complex interlocked structures such as catenanes and rotaxanes. By incorporating additional binding sites, subsequent disruption of the metal-ligand template will result in mechanical motion or 'switching' behaviour. Students will develop skills in synthetic organic chemistry and coordination chemistry as well as being exposed to a wide variety of characterisation techniques.
