Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

The bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of the serious, infectious human disease melioidosis, which is endemic in several areas of SE Asia, as well as northern Australia. Although definitive sources of infection have yet to be definitively-determined, contact with soils and soil-associated materials is commonly suspected. However, the persistence and physiological response of B. pseudomallei in the soil environment has yet to be comprehensively evaluated. This project will assess the physiological response of B. pseudomallei to several relevant environmental stressors using both soil microcosms and in vitro stress tests.
