Project Summary

Diffusion is a natural transport phenomenon that is fundamental to many real-world applications.  Mathematical models of diffusion give rise to equations that must be solved numerically.  These equations involve derivatives in time and space which may be of the standard kind, or in cases where anomalous diffusion is present, fractional.
This project is an investigation into the numerical solution of diffusion equations.  Depending on the student’s background and interests, the project will focus on

developing efficient numerical methods for solving diffusion equations

or

the implementation of these methods in a high performance environment, such as a GPU architecture;

or possibly both.

Expected outcomes, applications and/or benefits

The student will become familiar with modern numerical techniques for solving diffusion equations.  This will put the student in an excellent position to undertake future study in computational and applied mathematics, where diffusion equations play a crucial role.

The student will develop computer codes in MATLAB that will be useful in these future studies.

Required student skills/experience

MATLAB programming.  Basic familiarity with calculus and linear algebra, such as that obtained after two years of undergraduate study in mathematics.
