Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

In 1685, German mathematician Gottfried Leibniz (one of the two founding fathers of calculus) wrote to his frequent French collaborator L'Hopital to discuss the meaning of a derivative of order one half. It took more than three hundred years for this idea to catch on. Today, there are exciting new applications of these so-called "fractional derivatives" being discovered all the time, and suddenly it's a hot topic in research. This project would involve an investigation into the mathematical properties of fractional derivatives, and the numerical methods for solving fractional differential equations.
