Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

This project will assess the molecular systematic relationships of Australian Hydromyine water rats; represented in Australia by the water rat (Hydromys chrysogaster) and the water mouse (Xeromys myoides). H. chrysogaster has a widespread distribution in Australia and New Guinea and displays significant morphological variation, resulting in the description of more than fifteen synonyms of questionable validity. X. myoides is a nationally listed threatened species with a fragmented distribution in coastal Queensland, Northern Territory and New Guinea. A careful systematic revision of both taxa is required to resolve potential species or subspecies complexes, and to inform recovery actions of X. myoides.
