Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a major health issue that seriously affects quality of life and are a significant burden on health care systems around the world. The mechanism of action of many current therapies is unknown and consequently, there is a great need for highly-directed therapeutic strategies to aid in the understanding of the free radical basis underpinning neurodegeneration. This project will involve the synthesis and evaluation of new dual-acting antioxidants which combine nitroxides with dietary antioxidants. The development of the proposed novel nitroxides will aid in identifying the role that reactive oxygen species play in neurodegeneration for a variety of diseases. It will also facilitate the exploration of new chemical pathways and probe the tolerance of the nitroxide moiety to a range of different chemical reactions and biochemical transformations. Project supported by bursaries from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology.
