Overview
Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
The project is to analyse certain moving boundary problems used to describe experiments undertaken on the space shuttle Columbia, conducted as part of the so-called Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment. In particular, my interest is to track the melting of a single dendritic fragment. Mathematically, the problem is similar to that of a contracting bubble in a porous medium otherwise saturated with fluid. There are existing papers on this problem, including some of my own. There are some extensions that are required to match with the experimental results, and this would form part of the project. More generally, the mathematical problems that will arise in this project fall into a broad class of moving boundary problems that are of great interest to many in the Applied Mathematics community.
This challenging project would involve the use of asymptotic analysis, stability theory and computational work.
