Overview
Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
This project will involve using a telescope in an observatory on the top of S block on the Gardens Point campus to detect meteor impacts on the Moon. The project will involve setting up a video camera to record images of the dark side of the Moon for several hours during first and last quarters.
The observatory will be controlled remotely so there will be no need to be physically present (and so in principle could be controlled using a computer with wireless internet at the beach). Software will be developed for trawling through several hours of video data to detect faint flashes. The brightness and location of all confirmed meteor impacts will be recorded. The brightness of flashes will be analysed to estimate the size of the meteoroids impacting with the Moon.
