Overview
Antarctic macro-fauna are known to harbour enteric parasites such as helminths and parasitic protozoans. Many of these are disseminated via faecal discharge and can be sampled for within collected scat samples. Isolation of these parasites is the first step in determining parasite loads and distribution, as well as providing material for subsequent phylogenetic analysis of parasite evolution and dissemination within Antarctica. This project will isolate and purify helminth and encysted protozoan parasites from wildlife faecal material collected in the Prydz Bay/Vestfold Hills region of Antarctica; including S. polar skuas, Adelie penguins and Weddell seals.
The project is suitable for students seeking practical laboratory experience in parasitological and/or clinical or environmental microbiological techniques.
