Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

Recent studies conducted by the ILAQH in Brisbane and other parts of Australia as well as a few studies published in literature, reported on the phenomena of formation of nanometre nuclei particles at size range of approximately 10 nm. These instances are of short duration, and the nuclei particles then grow to larger diameters. When those particle outbursts were observed, total particle concentration was always low and most likely representative of a background continental aerosol.

Hypothesis/Aims: At present there are only hypothesis about the physical processes behind the formation of these nano-particles. The aim of the project will be to conduct experimental studies to explain the mechanisms responsible for the process.

Approaches: Experimental studies using the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer to investigate the formation of the nano-particles under a variety of environmental conditions, and to apply the aerosol dynamic models and classical nucleation theory to explain the mechanisms responsible for the process.
