Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

The phenomenon of interactions between corona ions and atmospheric aerosols is a significant public health concern, because they implies that the increase of electric charge carried by the aerosols may result in a non-trivial increase in lung deposition of inhaled pollutant aerosols. Despite these facts only a few studies of limited scope were conducted on this topic and fundamental experimental and theoretical research is needed in order to understand and quantify the effect of corona ions on traffic-related airborne particulate pollutants. The proposed study aims at enhancing significantly our fundamental knowledge by using systematic experimental, theoretical and modeling approaches. The main objective of this project is identification and quantification of the physical mechanisms occurring in multi-component system of vehicle emissions and HVPL generated ions.
