Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

Weeds can cause significant ecological and economic damage in agricultural, pastural and natural habitats. Research is being conducted on the efficacy of insects as biological control agents on a number of weeds of significance in Queensland. The establishment and successful feeding of potential agents could be related to the presence of physical and chemical defences of the target plants.

The proposed study will investigate differences in leaf ornamentation (such as frequency and density of defence structure such as glands and hairs) among morphologically and genetically varying populations of two weeds (cat's claw creeper and bellyache bush).

This project will enable a student to develop essential techniques and skills in anatomy, such as use of scanning electron microscopes (SEM), microtomy, general histology and preparation of specimens.
