Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

This project explores the unique context in which innovation takes place. The development and adoption of an innovation requires time and resources with unknown ex ante results (risky decision). The sports environment provides an experimental setting to explore human reactions to innovations.

The key aim of the project is to focus on the consequences of radical innovations (e.g. the Fosbury flop or V-style in ski jumping). Interesting questions arise including:

  • are younger athletes faster in adjusting to innovations?
  • do we observe a change in the career length of athletes (e.g. shorter)?
  • do we observe a change in the athletes' ranking positions (e.g. athletes not in the top positions have a stronger incentive to adjust to innovations)?
