Overview
Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
The Oleaceae are a cosmopolitan angiosperm plant family consisting of a number of economically and ecologically important genera. Recent work has shown that the evolutionary relationships of the sub-tribe Oleinae, that contains a large number of Australian plants, remains poorly understood despite the incorporation of substantial molecular data. Before we can address issues of conservation and ecological significance, a thorough taxonomic revision is required for this group. This project will incorporate morphological data and generate additional molecular (DNA sequence) data in an attempt to provide better resolution to the phylogenetic relationships. A student undertaking this project will develop a sound understanding of plant morphology, systematics and taxonomic revision protocols as well as strong analytical skills involved in reconstructing phylogenies.
