Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

The advent of touch-based interfaces has led to new login schemes being developed, such as the graphical grid lock screen popularised on Android devices.

Little is known about the security of such systems. Do users choose good passwords? Or are their passwords biased, for example by choosing symmetric patterns, or often choosing a first point in the top left of the screen?

In this project, you will:

  • analyse the security of graphical grid passwords
  • help develop security metrics
  • design and implement a test system
  • carry out a large-scale human subjects study
  • analyse the results.

Outcomes

You will learn:

  • about recent advances in authentication technologies
  • how to carry out human-subject-based research.

Your results will contribute to new knowledge and may become the subject of a research paper.

Skills required

This project is suited to students who have some programming proficiency in web technologies (HTML, Javascript).
