Overview
Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
The common rock-rat, Zyzomys argurus, is a native rodent found on rocky outcrops and scree slopes across the breadth of northern Australia. There are three isolated mainland populations: one in the Pilbara (WA), one in the Top End (NT) / Gulf of Carpentaria hinterland (NT/QLD) and a third in eastern QLD. A fourth, smaller population from central QLD near Winton is apparently isolated from other QLD populations found to its east and west. Little is known about the nature of diversity within this species. This project aims to determine the extent and pattern of population structuring in the common rock-rat using a combined genetic and taxonomic approach. A combined genetic and taxonomic approach will be used to elucidate the relationship among isolated populations of Z. argurus.
