Overview
Topic status: In progress
Overview
Pests of stored grains cause major losses and require heavy use of insecticides and fumigants. As part of a new QUT project to evaluate the use of microorganisms as alternatives to chemical insecticides for stored grains, we will establish laboratory colonies of insects and conduct bioassays of fungal pathogens on stored grain pests (in collaboration with Queensland DPI / DEEDI).
Research activities
The research activities involve:
- maintaining insect colonies
- culturing and harvesting entomopathogenic fungi
- conducting laboratory bioassays
- may also include opportunities to work with staff at Queensland DPI / DEEDI (at Boggo Rd research facility).
Expected outcomes
The expected outcomes are having laboratory colonies established and assay protocols evaluated.
