Overview

Ecologists wish to study the movement and bellowing of koalas. This project involves the research and design of koala collars using microcontrollers (arduino), GPS units, accelerometers and vibration sensors/microphones. This project would suit a student interested in hardware, sensors and low level software. The project will involve working with koala ecologists.

Research activities

The research activities are to:

  • investigate and prototype arduino based koala collar
  • build a prototype and deploy on koalas (ecologists will manage the animals!)
  • collect and analyse data from the collar.

Expected outcomes

The expected outcomes are:

  • a prototype collar design
  • a list of recommendations for collar
  • a short report – possible basis for a conference paper.

Duration

The project duration is 8 weeks.
