Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
This fundamental research will lead to the development of integrated train planning system and an autonomous handling system for container terminals. E-Intermodal will be based on sophisticated mathematical models and artificial intelligence that will significantly improve the efficiency of intermodal terminal operations. Rather than focus on the technology of autonomous driving which already exists, this study will consider how a group of handling machines can autonomously cooperate with each other. Through this cooperation, containers can be handled in the optimum sequence without conflict between handling machines. The terminal layout will be optimised to facilitate the introduction of autonomous handling machines.
