Workflow systems provide automation support for business processes. Typical workflow systems have extensive knowledge about timing and resource utilisation and maintain extensive process and audit logs. Workflow systems also provide the ability to monitor currently running processes and examine various properties (e.g. the resource that carried out the work, the materials consumed, the execution time etc.) of these processes. However, cost is not normally included in such workflow monitors. The benefits of having accurate and real-time cost information at your fingertips are enormous. Cost information can be used for resource allocation decisions as well as for process execution decisions. Having accurate cost information will enable organisations to make cost-aware operational and strategic decisions with confidence. This project will look into research issues involved in making workflow systems cost-aware.
