Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

Present business process models are typically represented as 2D directed graph representations. 3D versions of these process models have been developed, utilizing various virtual world and graphics API platforms. Some videos of early approaches are shown here:

However, they are not conducive to collaborative editing in remote process modeling scenarios, as they are based around graph rendering paradigms that do not allow more than one person to use the graph at once easily.

Aims/Approach: In this project you will investigate and develop an integrated, collaborative 3D process model rendering approach that will allow for the following:

  • Multiple viewpoint rendering - using a modified hyperbolic approach for more than one person at a time in a virtual world.
  • Spatial transformations - allowing the transformation of the model from a hyperbolic collaborative representation, to a spatially distributed model (ie. morph the graph to match location of task execution within a model of a business like the airport video above)

A small qualitative test evaluation will also be carried out with students and staff for validation purposes.

You will need to have strong programming and 3D computer graphics skills.
