Overview

Students entering university chemistry often struggle with basic concepts, such as bonding and matter. This project aims to investigate the sources of misconceptions and how high school and university teachers can better communicate the concepts.

Research activities

The project involves analysis of survey data using statistical software and writing up the results in a scholarly format.

Expected outcomes

The project will result in better understanding of the reasons for conceptual misconceptions, and suggest strategies to improve teaching to first year students.

Duration of project

Flexible, around 8 weeks during semester break

Number of hours

Around 30 hours/week are expected (including library research and write-up).
