Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

This project will use molecular methods to examine the substrates and potential function of a likely critical proteases from the pathogenic bacterium Legionella pneumophila. The project will involve overexpression and purification of a selected protease and biochemical analysis of the activity of the protease. The role of the protease during the biology of legionella will also be examined.

Hypothesis/Aims: A genetic mutant will be made in the protease gene and the phenotype of the mutant will be tested in disease models, including macrophage invasion.

Approaches: The project will involve a range of molecular approaches, bacterial culture, cell culture and many general laboratory skills.
