Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

There is well documented reluctance from targets of workplace sexual harassment to report the problem through formal organisational channels. However, a promising approach to prevent and redress sexual harassment is to gain the support of bystanders.

This study uses existing interview data and a framework that suggests that when bystanders intervene, they do so on the basis of immediacy and level of involvement. The study will explore:

  • the ways in which bystanders intervene or provide support for targets
  • assist targets in handling the complaint process
  • circumstances where bystanders do nothing and propose reasons for this inaction.
