The importance of effectively balancing full-time education and part-time employment has been gaining ground in recent years. This mixed-methods project draws on two existing data sets (surveys and focus groups) derived from a large cohort of Queensland highschool students. The research will explore levels of work-study balance reported by different groups of students (boys/girls; year levels; regions) and also how the competing demands of paid work and school work are managed and negotiated by these students. The findings will provide insights into how very young workers traverse paid and unpaid work and inform youth employment and education policy.
