Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

Invasive plant species can form dense populations across large tracts of land. Based on observations of dominance, invaders are often described as competitively superior, despite little direct evidence of competitive interactions with natives. The few studies that have measured competitive interactions tend to compare an invader with native species that are unlikely to be strong competitors because they are functionally different. The main objective of this project will be to measure functional traits in several C4 perennial invasive grass species and compare them with dominant native C4 perennial grasses and then relate these traits to levels of individual fitness. There will be opportunities to use several different tools in this project including field studies, experiments and statistical modelling.
