Overview
Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.
Project summary
The project aims to analyse the cryptographic algorithms used to encrypt satellite phone transmissions. Mobile phone encryption algorithms have been extensively analysed, but the algorithms used in the GMR-1 and GMR-2 Satphone standards have not been subject to the same scrutiny. Specific details of the algorithms have not been publicly available until 2012. Now that the algorithm details are available, we plan to analyse them to determine properties of the sequences they produce, and analyse the security provided.
The investigation will involve:
- algebraic analysis of the cryptographic algorithms
- computer simulation of the cryptographic algorithms
- statistical analysis of binary sequences produced by the algorithms
- writing a report summarising the results of the investigations.
Outcomes
The expected outcomes of this project include:
- software implementation of the encryption algorithms
- analysis of the security properties of the satphone stream cipher encryption algorithms
- identification of weaknesses in these algorithms.
