Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

The halogens (F, Cl, Br and I) are significantly fractionated in the earth by biological and physical processes. The halogen chemistry of the hydrosphere is well understood. The halogen chemistry of reservoirs in the earth's mantle is, however, poorly constrained. This project will be to investigate the variation in halogen chemistry in fluid inclusions in recent volcanics including; mid ocean ridge basalts; ocean island basalts and continental flood basalts. This will allow for the distribution of halogens in the major reservoirs in the earth's mantle to be defined. The objective of the project is to assess the value of halogen chemistry in tracing the interaction.
