Medicines don't work in people who don't take them. In type 2 diabetes adherence to oral medications ranges from 40-90% and in type 2 diabetes adherence to insulin is about 60%.
People who don't take their medicines have progression of their disease. In type 2 diabetes, this is an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, eye disease, and loss of nerves.
Improving the adherence to medicines in diabetes will improve the outcomes for the people with the disease.
