Project Summary

The emerging mobile technologies have created a huge demand for video streaming applications. Users increasingly choose portable devices, including smart phones and tablets, to consume visual media for the freedom to watch anytime and anywhere in the easy to carry pocketsize device. In order to deliver high quality videos smoothly over the wireless networks, it is important for content providers to optimise the media for customers’ devices while at the same time maintaining a high quality of service, especially when the bandwidth becomes limited.
Adaptive video delivery aims to provide optimal video quality to a user while handling huge variation of constraints from viewing platforms, network conditions, and also user preferences. To achieve this goal, the delivery system needs to be equipped with an intelligent delivery strategy. In this strategy, a quality of experience (QoE) model will be used to predict and compute user acceptability score of a series of existing qualities of a video under current circumstance such as network bandwidth and device screen size. Based on the computation, the system will determine the video quality that achieves the highest QoE to deliver to the user.

To implement the system, the student will need to:

  • Set up a simulation of network that can detect and simulate the bandwidth load.
  • Develop a program to calculate the QoE (the formula is already exist) in the server.
  • (Optional) Extend an existing iPhone application to support certain user setting functions.

Expected outcomes, applications and/or benefits

The server will be implemented to deliver videos based on user requirement and preferences and the bandwidth load. In particular, the simulation of network load is crucial to calculate the network latency when such system is deployed in the real-time applications.
