Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

Audio and video sensor networks are useful for gathering data about the environment including animal presence and behaviour. However the data requirements of such sensors are high; in many situations it is impractical to stream all data back to a server. The goal of this project is to research how A/V data can be adaptively processed across sensor networks and servers. For example where available bandwidth is low data can be filtered or part processed on sensors and only a summary of the data sent to a servers. Queries and filters can be moved from the server to sensors. This project would suit a student interested in sensors, networks, middleware and service oriented computing. It will involve programming and experimenting with embedded Linux sensor boards (beagleboards) and servers to test ideas.
