Overview
Topic status: In progress
Overview
We have been using simple voice recorders to record environmental sounds (birds, frogs etc) as a way to measure biodiversity. This project is designed to investigate the effectiveness of such devices in particular to understand what kinds of sounds can be captured and at what kind of range.
The project would suit an ecology student or a student interested in sound and environmental monitoring. An interest in bird watching would also be beneficial.
Research activities
This project will involve extensive field work at the Samford ecological research facility. Experiments will be designed and run to test what sounds can be measured and at what range. It is envisaged that a grid of sensors will be deployed covering different environments and that recordings will be analysed to understand which recorders are able to detect which sounds.
Expected outcomes
The expected outcomes for this project are:
- some experimental data concerning the effectiveness and range of sound recorders
- a short report leading to a research paper.
