Overview

Topic status: We're looking for students to study this topic.

Modelling groundwater flow in the vicinity of the water table, where the soil is both saturated (below) and unsaturated (above) requires some care. On large computational domains, mesh refinement in this region may not be a viable option, particularly if the location of the water table varies significantly over time. Instead we can turn to high-accuracy interpolation schemes to correctly model the flow in this region. This project would be an investigation of possible high-accuracy interpolation schemes, and their application to two- and three-dimensional groundwater flow problems.
