Overview

Motivation/Background

The Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) is a graphical grammar used to represent business process models. This static 2D representation is compact and clear for experts in the area of Business Process Management, but is problematic for non-expert viewers. Process modelling professionals often report the difficulty of communicating a newly modelled business process to their clients. We believe that a 3D Virtual Environment should be used to model such diagrams, enhancing the insight offered by such diagrams to the naive viewer due to the contextual information of a 3D model of the business.

The concept is illustrated in the following YouTube videos:

Research activities

Students will help with the scripting and further development of the prototype BPMN editor within the Open Simulator 3D Virtual Environment. The prototype system will be extended with service and file handling capabilities, and spatial graph rendering approaches. The intention is to use the system in remote collaborative process modelling.

Required Knowledge

The required knowledge for this student topic is:

  • some business process modelling knowledge
  • strong programming/scripting experience
  • 3D environment knowledge.

Expected outcomes

Literature review of graph rendering techniques, prototype system extensions, and system outputs to be included in a graph rendering paper for the Graph Drawing conference - GD 2012, amongst others.
